Ebook About Charlie Wheelan and his family do what others dream of: They take a year off to travel the world. This is their story. What would happen if you quit your life for a year? In a pre–COVID-19 world, the Wheelan family decided to find out; leaving behind work, school, and even the family dogs to travel the world on a modest budget. Equal parts "how-to" and "how-not-to"—and with an eye toward a world emerging from a pandemic—We Came, We Saw, We Left is the insightful and often hilarious account of one family’s gap-year experiment.Wheelan paints a picture of adventure and connectivity, juggling themes of local politics, global economics, and family dynamics while exploring answers to questions like: How do you sneak out of a Peruvian town that has been barricaded by the local army? And where can you get treatment for a flesh-eating bacteria your daughter picked up two continents ago? From Colombia to Cambodia, We Came, We Saw, We Left chronicles nine months across six continents with three teenagers. What could go wrong?Book We Came, We Saw, We Left: A Family Gap Year Review :
I have a love/hate relationship with this book. There were moments when I would have struggled to give it one star and many others when it clearly deserved five (hence the three stars) I enjoyed the travelogue portions, especially, because the author’s writing is compelling and vivid when he describes their sometimes harrowing experiences on buses or trains—even taxis—or as he describes the natural scenery or local bureaucrats encountered along the way. On the other hand, as an older adult I read much of the book as an anthropological study of modern life. Is this really how parents interact with their children today? God help us. The children come across as confident and intelligent but also whiny and undisciplined. I kept imagining what my own parents’ reactions would have been in similar situations. Certainly they would have cared little about what their children were feeling (a recurring question from parents to children in this book: “how does that make you feel? how do you think it makes your sister feel?”); my parents would have cut straight to the chase by laying out (in no uncertain terms) what behavior they expected—and to heck with how you feel about it. What I learned from this book was that modern parents want to be chums with their little charges—a point driven home repeatedly by the father’s sense of humor, which matched to an alarming degree that of his 13-year-old son (think bodily functions and sex), a fact both disturbing and instructive. So, if you’re not an old codger like me, you will probably see these familial interactions as normal and even salutary. You’ll enjoy the book and should consider it a five star success. If you were raised in a more traditional era, you may find yourself shaking your head often enough to blur your vision, so read it sitting down This book is not a gushy, adjective-laced, bucolic travelogue of remote places designed to satisfy the local Tourist Bureaus. In fact, although I enjoy traveling, I have no desire to see many of the places Team Wheelan -- that's the Mom, the Dad, the three teenagers plus several friends and relatives -- visited. It did, however, give me a desire to spend more time with my family.Team Wheelan took a nine-month sabbatical and traveled the world: South America, New Zealand, Australia, Africa, India, Vietnam, Cambodia, Georgia (Eurasia, not U.S.), and Germany. Everywhere they went was interesting, some places were beautiful, a few were exotic. Everywhere they went was an adventure, a misadventure, and/or a minor catastrophe. In retrospect, since they survived, it was all fun and made for great memories.Wheelan writes in an easy conversational style, often relying on movies to make comparisons or elucidate a detail. He does his best writing about the kids. Maybe his wife's personality doesn't come through as vividly. Still, she's the force that allows this trip to happen. Wheelan's description of places is usually limited to no more than a paragraph because it is the experience, not the place, that matters. The best parts of the book were these experiences and the family dynamics: the way each person's innate character came out, how they responded to each other, how they resolved most issues. Charlie, the father, has a dry, sarcastic wit and relies on Leah, his wife, to organize almost everything. Katrina, 18, desires her independence which Ma and Pa actually give her without too much angst; Sophie, 16, is stubborn and fails to see the need for long-term goals about her school work; CJ, 13, is an incessant talker whose sensitivity results in frequent crying. All of them are intelligent and curious. Their interactions, not always pretty but always honest, are what makes We Came, We Saw, We Left so enjoyable.
