Ebook About
A "beautifully written travelogue" that draws on the latest scholarly research as well as a lifetime of exploration to light on the extraordinary Anasazi culture of the American Southwest (Entertainment Weekly). The greatest "unsolved mystery" of the American Southwest is the fate of the Anasazi, the native peoples who in the eleventh century converged on Chaco Canyon (in today's southwestern New Mexico) and built what has been called the Las Vegas of its day, a flourishing cultural center that attracted pilgrims from far and wide, a vital crossroads of the prehistoric world. The Anasazis' accomplishments -- in agriculture, in art, in commerce, in architecture, and in engineering -- were astounding, rivaling those of the Mayans in distant Central America.By the thirteenth century, however, the Anasazi were gone from Chaco. Vanished. What was it that brought about the rapid collapse of their civilization? Was it drought? pestilence? war? forced migration? mass murder or suicide? For many years conflicting theories have abounded. Craig Childs draws on the latest scholarly research, as well as on a lifetime of adventure and exploration in the most forbidding landscapes of the American Southwest, to shed new light on this compelling mystery.

Book House of Rain: Tracking a Vanished Civilization Across the American Southwest Review :

I have read numerous books about "lost" civilizations in the Americas and am always on the lookout for new and groundbreaking theories. Based on the title and description, I had hoped that this book would meet that criteria. Disappointed is not a strong enough word for this weak imitation of a research volume. The vast majority of this work consists of an over dramatized account of the author's hiking and camping trips. I find it hard to believe that a reasonably sensible person would actually dive into a full blown flash flood. If we are going to embellish, let's at least keep it at a reasonable level. If I wanted to read a book about hiking and camping, I would purchase a book about hiking and camping or I would go back and read my own journals. It is a complete disappointment that an Indiana Jones wannabe will sell himself as an expert and offer nothing in the way of substance or evidence.
We all make mistakes now and then and this will be one of mine, I slogged through the first 108 pages before I finally just gave up. I took a trip several years ago to Santa Fe just so I could go see Chaco Canyon and it was a great experience. So when I saw this book I thought it would enhance my recollections of that trip and fill in some details, WRONG!This writer is terrible, he never uses 4 words when twenty will do, I guess he is trying to be some kind of poet or whatever, but his style is all style with no substance. If that wasn't bad enough he has very little of interest about the place he is supposedly writing about. He comes off as a very conceited individual who likes to talk about himself and his thoughts but forgets his actual subject.Oh well maybe someone will buy it at Goodwill for a doorstop.
