I have various friends who have retired all over Latin America, and I've toyed with the idea for years. But I kept getting hung up on all the practical questions. How do visas work, and what kind do you need? What are your chances for making friends if you're not fluent in Spanish? Just how hot are the summers? Should I rent or buy? How the heck do you buy a house in another country anyway? The book chooses 8 reasonable locations--meaning, places that Americans expats would be comfortable. (Note--the book is clearly written with Americans in mind, but would still be useful for people from other countries, particularly English-speaking countries.) I appreciated that there was some variety in locales--this one was better for waterspouts and fishing, that one more of an arts community, etc. Obviously the author chose places that he personally thinks are great, but there's an honest assessment of benefits and risks (some places are more prone to earthquakes or seasonal storms). Most of these sections is narrative, but at the end of each description is a handy chart-like bit that gives summer and winter temperatures, distance to nearest airport, and so on, and also ranks the locales on features like affordability, safety, access to health care, and more. After the different areas are described come chapters on the practicalities--visas, banking, taxes, whether or not you could work in Mexico, how much money you'd reasonably need. Note that this is NOT a backpacker's guide, although neither is it a guide for the super-wealthy. Rather, it seems aimed at middle-class people who have some sort of reliable income or savings (retirees being an obvious target) who are just looking to get more (a lot more, actually) for their money in a place with a great culture and weather. Health care is an entire chapter, and for some Americans, this might be the deciding factor in moving to Mexico, especially for older people. Care that is both far cheaper and far better? How do you argue with that?I especially appreciate that the book makes definite recommendations, rather than always saying "It depends on what you want" (which a lot of these sorts of books do), and that the author puts a definite dollar figure on things, everything from food to a bottle of wine to renting a car to elective surgery to building a house. I skipped over a few sections that don't apply to me, like schools and childcare and moving pets, but they seemed as thorough as the other parts.I also appreciated all the links to more information--TripAdvisor for images, YouTube videos, and official sites. Sometimes the answer really is "Check with the Embassy," so it's nice to have all those web addresses already found for you.A nice section at the end actually has not only a list of things to take into consideration when making the move but even a schedule--what you should do 2 months in advance, 1 month in advance, etc, as well as, a sample budget.I've lived overseas before, but never in Mexico (although I have done business trips there). I thought the author's discussion of Mexican culture and how it differs from US culture (towards the beginning of the book) was spot on--and was very honest in saying these are some benefits, and these aspects might drive certain types of people crazy. The book isn't saying "Drop everything and do this, and everything will be great." Rather, it's an honest, open look at something that, with some planning, is in reach for people who might otherwise struggle to eke out a comfortable living in the US; and importantly, it spells out exactly HOW to do that. And now, back to the Duolingo Spanish lessons for me... If ever there was a perfect book, chock-filled with the most important you need to know in order to move to Mexico, this is it.My wife and I have been considering moving from the U.S. to Mexico for years. We returned a month ago from San Jose' Del Cabo where we also visited Cabo San Lucas proper. Needless to say, it was amazing. The people were incredibly nice and we felt safe walking at night.Cabo is one of the places which Russell mentions in his book (which he calls a guide). But, unlike other "Moving to Mexico" books and videos, Russell shells out information that you will NEVER find in one reference. He has spent nearly two decades in Mexico as a gringo, so he has first-hand knowledge which he's built up over the years. Now living there with several successful businesses, he definitely shows that he knows what he's talking about. What makes this book unique, is that he talks about not only the best, most affordable, safest places to live, he talks about moving there with dogs, what the different types of visas are, health care, television stations, private schools for the kids, bringing a car and where to get it fixed (and important things to have in it), so on and so on. It's FILLED with things you NEED to know, not a bunch of "use my services" pitches.Russell also shows his humor with the following: "Often, when moving objects or furniture, the locals will forego the bother of securing the load, and instead trust in God to guide their trip. This results in the sudden appearance of everything from random boxes to couches in the road, as well as cement bags, baby carriages, stray animals, and every imaginable sort of miscellaneous hazard."There are just too many good things to say about this book and should be considered the Holy Grail of "Moving to Mexico" books. I read it in two days and have more highlights than any book I had highlighted in grad school. Do yourself a favor, and buy it. You will NOT be disappointed.
